Big Up the Brassicas

Can we please have a moment of appreciation for cabbage plants (brassica) of all kinds?

Did you know that every plant or vegetable in this picture belong in the same family?

Brassica plants give more diverse crops than any other genus. They belong to the mustard family. They are so versatile as we can eat their leaves, stems, roots and flowers.

A very good feature of most vegetables that come from the cabbage family is their ability to grow during the coldest months, stay fresh and can be harvested from the soil as and when needed. Perfect for the Welsh vegetable garden and living a self-sufficient life.

Which crops from the cabbage family have you grown in the garden this year?

Here are brassicas I have grown this year:

  • White Cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Red Cabbage
  • Swedes
  • Savoy Cabbage
  • Purple Sprouting Broccoli
  • Winter Cabbage
  • Turnips
  • Spring Cabbage
  • Raddish
  • Kale Nero
  • Kohlrabi
  • Russian Kale
  • Sprouts
  • Cauliflower
  • Curly Kale
  • Bok choy
  • Calabrese

Thank you very much to the cabbage family for filling the garden, the kitchen cupboards and of course our belly’s every year!
