Tomatoes and basil are key ingredients in many recipes and their flavours go perfectly together, but they are not only food companions but also complement each other while they grow in the garden together.
Every year I plant them together in the greenhouse as you can see in the photo. There are so many benefits to planting them together. Basil plants help prevent insects and infections developing on the tomatoes as well as suppressing aphids and fungi. Some gardeners also insist that they improve the growth and taste of the tomatoes as well. Both plants need the same growing conditions, somewhere nice and warm with plenty of sunshine – they’re a perfect match!
So remember, when planting your plants in the garden, consider which plants grow best together. This method is called Companion planting.
