For Peat’s Sake

Sustainable gardening is very important to me, especially in relation to protecting nature and the important habitats that are all around us here in Wales. There is so much focus on planting trees to reduce our carbon footprint that we often forget the importance of peat bogs in storing carbon in the environment. Peat stores as much as twice the amount of carbon compared to trees as well as storing groundwater and preventing major flooding.

I strongly feel that we should do everything we can to protect the peat bogs of Wales and the world, and as gardeners we have an important role to play in making sure that we don’t use peat in the garden.

In this video, I share some tips on how we can successfully grow crops in peat-free compost and some advice on how we can all adapt our gardening methods to be more sustainable.
