Ripening tomatoes

As tomatoes ripen, the turn from being green to red in colour and their taste sweetens. You won’t get anything better than home-grown tomatoes.

Did you know that tomatoes get heavier after you harvest them? If you harvest 1kg worth of fruit today, it may weigh 1.2kg tomorrow!

Tips for ripening tomatoes:

If you have green tomatoes in the greenhouse or garden, place a banana peel on the branches next to them. The banana peel speeds up the ripening process significantly because they emit ethylene gases – that’s why bananas quickly turn brown.

Likewise, if you leave some of the red tomatoes on the plant for a few days, the plant itself produces ethylene which makes the other fruit mature quicker.

Then, they’ll be perfect for a lovely tomato, black pepper and vinegar sandwich… Yumm!
